Beating Anxiety
With all the stress of the holidays, a new year, and all the bad
news that we are bombarded with every day, I'd venture to guess
some of you are feeling a little 'on edge' these days.
Here are a few tips on how to manage anxiety and stress:
1) Eat healthy. Eat things that are good for the body like bananas, nuts, beans, spinach, sunflower seeds etc. For a great list, go here: http://www.wikihow.com/Overcome-Anxiety-Naturally-With-Foods
2) Exercise. Easier said than done with our busy lifestyles. Bring a 5 pound weight to work with you, take ten minutes and do as many reps as you can, and remember to breathe. Park your car as far from your destination as possible so you can walk a little further. Join a local basketball league. Instead of sitting on your butt and watching television when you get home, go for a 20 minute walk. You will feel better within days, more energetic and alert. Trust me. I started on a stationary bicycle for three minutes- you do not have to start big. Just stay consistent.
3) Avoid caffeine and other stimulants. If you want your body to calm down, help it. If you need energy, EXERCISE, or eat natural foods that will power you up. Oats, beans, CHOCOLATE (yum!), bananas (there's my favorite again) and other fresh fruit, almonds or pistachios etc... Avoid heavy fat-filled lunches, or tons of bread or other simple carbs.
4) Quit smoking. One of the things that helped me quit for good was the realization that smoking actually made me feel disgusting. Instead of being a comforting way to calm down, it made me sick. I could feel it in my body, and that nasty feeling was the last straw. Recognize how you feel before and after you smoke, and try to get rid of that habit.
5) Breathing techniques do wonders! Breathe through your nose for 2 seconds (counting one-one thousand, two-one thousand), then breathe out through your mouth for four seconds. Do that for a full minute if you need to, and you will 100 times better.
When all else fails, go bowling.
