And peeing their pants. Ah, but they do it all with advertising on their vehicles. Whoever is behind the craze it has become is a genius. Naming rights to the 'Cup', sponsored teams and drivers, cars covered in consumerism. Se magnifique.

It really does appeal to the most primal of urges, to watch others at the brink of disaster! Speak with anyone who watches and that is basically why they watch. The cars aren't really stock cars; the strategy isn't really intricate enough to be appealing; the drivers are all essentially less skilled jockeys. It's really about the noises, speed, but more importantly, the crashes!

Its a skill type of contest like golf and bowling. Wouldn't call those a sport either but they are treated as such.

Wouldnt knock the redneck aspect of nascar. it is a national sport and kicks ass for attendence. I have no use for it, but would like to eventually go to a race to say I've been. Track up in NH has two races a year, but a race is an all day thing as traffice is a nightmare going in and out.
