How much should you pay to save your pet?

I was talking to a friend the other day who has a 9 year old Black Lab. The dog was hit by a car and required over $6000 in vet bills to "fix him up" Regardless, the vet has said that the dog might not live do to infections etc.

When do you draw the line with paying to save your pet? $100, $10,000, more?

I love my dog but can't help but wonder what I would do if faced with this decision...
Afterall that is semester of college, two or three years of car payment etc... *I do know that my wife and kids would have a higher dollar figure ceiling in mind for the vet bill then I.

Uuggh...this is such a hard and very personal decision and I don't think we can judge someone on the differences from our own. For me, it is "sky's the limit". I look at our 4-legged child as just that...a member of our family that I have commited to through thick and thin.

However, I think that most would think that I am crazy!

BTW, my hubby's "price tag" would be much lower than mine, too!

Well Mic is a special dog for sure, and being crazy is not so badCool

I really dig your blog with Mic in it http://www.knowyourpro.org/magazine/read/my-puppy-reminds-me-ofa-mn-mortgage-client_20.html

After rereading it, now I see why the sky would be the limit for you.

*Based on his size, if need be, Mic looks like he might need a horse doctor!

Our black lab, who we lost 2 1/2 years ago to kidney failure brought on by lymes was in a very similar situation. He became very ill and through testing discovered that it was lymes disease. The doctors gave him a less than 30% chance of living...he was a very sick boy. We opted to try and beat the odds. After a fast $4k, he pulled himself through it....long hospital visit, twice weekly introvenious flushings and lots of meds. The lymes had ultimately damaged his kidneys beyond repair and we knew that would eventually take his life. We had another 5 glorious years with our friend. His quality of life during those 5 years was just as he was before he got sick.

Would I do it all over again? You betcha! :)

Oh boy...I know....we thought Pup's vet bills were high. I think when Mic becomes elderly, he might break the bank! Yikes...gonna have to start a savings account just for him.

Sorry to hear about the Black Lab. I did not know there was Lymes in Minn.
Lymes sucks, I had it (got it in NY) and sometimes think I still do....

Hey Sherri, why don't you start selling "Mic pony rides" to raise money for his future vet fund...hopefully he will live a long healthy life and you can spend it on yourself

My dog Wookie is a big dog too. He is 3 and my best friend. Before him my shepard Claire 8 yrs old got hit by a car and died right away. I would have paid anything to save her, but then I would have never have gotten Wookie, (he was just a $50 donation)
